The hospitals that make up the ARH system are consistently recognized for their medical excellence. Most recently, Whitesburg ARH Hospital’s commitment to quality improvement and coordination of resources to provide their patients with the highest quality stroke care was recognized by the Norton Healthcare/UK HealthCare - Stroke Care Network. Whitesburg ARH Hospital was named a “Rising Star” for its work in improving stroke care for its patients. As an affiliate in the Stroke Care Network, Whitesburg ARH has access to Norton Healthcare and UK HealthCare’s expertise and resources to ensure their hospital offers “the best care for stroke” for their citizens.

The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health and iVantage® Health Analytics have recognized three ARH critical access hospitals – Mary Breckinridge ARH, McDowell ARH and Morgan County ARH – among the nation’s top performing acute care hospitals for their overall excellence in Quality.

Harlan ARH Hospital was recognized as a 2013 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by the Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in the U.S. Harlan ARH was recognized for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance of pneumoniaand surgical care.

McDowell ARH Hospital also was ranked among the top 10 rural Kentucky hospitals for excellence in Outcomes. Morgan County ARH Hospital also was ranked among the top 12 rural Kentucky hospitals for excellence in Patient Satisfaction.

The Middlesboro ARH Home Health Agency was named to the Top 500 of the 2015 HomeCare Elite™, a recognition of the top-performing home health agencies in the United States. Winners are ranked by an analysis of publicly available performance measures in quality outcomes, best practice (process measure) implementation, patient experience (Home Health CAHPS®), quality improvement and consistency, and financial performance.

The Tug Valley ARH Pediatric Clinic received the Immunization Champion Award presented by the Kentucky Rural Health Association. The award recognizes individuals who make a significant contribution toward improving public health through their work in childhood and adult immunization.

The Emergency Departments at Summers County ARH and Morgan County ARH hospitals were designated as level four trauma centers. A trauma center is a hospital equipped to provide comprehensive emergency medical services to patients suffering traumatic injuries.

Safety is a top priority

The independent hospital watchdog, The Leapfrog Group, rated the following ARH locations, Beckley ARH Hospital, HarlanARH Hospital, Hazard ARH RegionalMedical Center and Whitesburg ARH Hospital. Results of this rating show the strong commitment to patient safety has earned all three hospitals an ‘A’ grade in Leapfrog’s elite national ratings program that rates hospitals on errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

The Hospital Safety Score is the gold-standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit. Beckley ARH made one of the most significant jumps ever indicated in the Hospital Safety Score, earning an “A” rating, ranking it as the safest hospital in southern West Virginia.

Additionally, Tug Valley ARH Regional MedicalCenter was among the Kentucky hospitals to receive the high safety scores. Tug Valley was cited for several hospital safety-related categories, including in a Consumer Report study that analyzed hospital-acquired infections across the U.S. in avoiding infections, avoiding readmissions, communicating about medication and discharge, appropriate use of chest and abdominal scanning, and avoiding mortality.
